Editorial Review

Workshops are great but sometimes you just need to have some one-on-one feedback.

If you have a completed first draft of a story or of a set of poems, and you need a professional eye on them, I can help with that. I’ll read your work several times and provide both an editorial overview, as well as some suggested line edits. One of the times I read your work, I’ll read it out loud and I will send you the audio file so you can hear your work reflected back to you. I’ll also provide a recommended reading list for you, based on the work you’ve submitted – essentially, some writers I think would help you take your writing to the next level. I’ll also suggest some places you can consider approaching to publish your work.

Our Process Together

  • You’ll send me up to 30 pages of fiction or poetry
  • I’ll do a deep reading of your work (i.e. reading it several times, including out loud)
  • I’ll send you an Editorial Overview Note
  • I’ll also send you your original file, with line edits
  • I’ll send you the audio file of me reading your work
  • I’ll send you a Recommended Reading list
  • We’ll do a 30-minute Skype Call to review, answer any questions you may have
  • I’ll follow up that call with a list of Publication Suggestions

Editorial Review Pricing

  • $497 for up to 25 pages of fiction or poetry
  • If you do this process with me more more than once, all subsequent reviews are $297

Getting to Book!

If you’ve been writing for a while and have a good deal of content but aren’t sure how to pull a book together, I can help with that. I’ll review the work you have to date – reading it through several times so that I have a deep understanding of what you’re trying to achieve. I’ll then send you a set of clarifying questions that are arising from the work. Based on your answers, I’ll then provide an editorial overview which will include suggestions on how I think you could most effectively shape your work into a book.

I will read a portion of your work out loud and send you the audio file so you can hear what you’re doing with language. I also provide a reading list for you, based on the book I think you’re writing – some writers who have already solved some of the craft issues arising in your book-length work, or writers I think you’d enjoy and who’d help take your writing to the next level. I’ll also suggest some places I think you might consider publishing your work.

Our Process Together

  • You’ll send me up to 250 pages of prose or 100 pages of poetry
  • I’ll do a deep reading of your work (i.e. reading it several times, including out loud)
  • I’ll send you a set of Clarifying Questions
  • Based on your response to those questions, I’ll send you the first Editorial Overview Note
  • I’ll send you an audio file of me reading some of your work (e.g. one story, a chapter, one set of poems)
  • We’ll have a 45-minute Skype call (or in-person session where possible)
  • We’ll work together to develop your Getting to Book plan
  • I’ll send you Detailed Editorial Comments
  • You’ll continue to shape your book and I’ll connect with you regularly (as agreed) to provide accountability
  • I’ll send you a Recommended Reading list
  • I’ll send you a list of Publication Suggestions
  • You’ll send me YOUR NEW BOOK (!) – that is, the new draft manuscript
  • I’ll do a second review and send you another Editorial Overview Note
  • We’ll do another 45-minute Skype Call to review

If you've been feeling stuck lately and need to work through a set of issues to find your way back to the page again, I can work with you one-on-one to coach you through the challenges you're facing that stand between you and your best creative work. Due to the nature of the issues that typically arise for writers, I do require a 3-month commitment for coaching as part of the accountability work we'll do together. Weekly 45-minute coaching sessions are held via Zoom, with recordings provided. Additional follow-up resources are personally tailored for you, depending on your specific challenges. Working from my own 20+ years of experience as a published writer with a day-job, I also use the approaches I've learned while studying with author Dr. Eric Maisel through his Advanced Creativity Coaching training. I offer an initial FREE 30 minute session so we can determine if we'd be a good fit to work together, so feel free to reach out and explore further.

3 months of Weekly Creativity Coaching: $1297

More Writing Resources

Are you working on a novel? Gail Anderson-Dargatz (award-winning and best-selling author) takes on a small group of novelists to mentor at the start of each season. It’s a several month long process and I highly recommend it for anyone starting out in the wilds of novel-writing.

Would you prefer the group process of a short fiction workshop? You might enjoy one of the groups run by Sarah Selecky over at the Story is a State of Mind school. I know a few people who’ve done these now and they’ve had really positive experiences.

If you've struggled with depression in the past, you might benefit from working with a certified creativity coach who's also had that experience. Like myself, Alison Gresik has studied with Eric Maisel, the founder of creativity coaching, and sometimes takes on new clients. I’ve worked with Alison as a client and can’t recommend her highly enough.

Wanting to learn how to get published in Literary Magazines? Rachel Thompson offers a course called LitMagLove to help you polish and submit.
